Commercial services: meet the team
Nael Clarke, commercial director
Nael has held a number of lead commercial roles within the NHS acute setting. Most recently, he headed an NHS/independent sector joint venture as facility chief operating officer. He has also worked within healthcare service transformation and innovation in the Middle East, and previously held commissioning roles within an NHS primary care setting. He leads the implementation of the Trust’s wide-ranging commercial services strategy.

Peter Baker, deputy commercial director
Peter has extensive commercial and programme management experience across the private and public sectors, and joined UHS from a neighbouring acute trust where he was head of commercial services.
He has worked in senior roles in the health service in the UK and in Canada, including leading teams in both commissioning and provider organisations. Prior to joining the NHS, Peter spent ten years working as a management consultant, advising organisations across all sectors and delivering commercial contract management and complex bid management services.
Peter is focused on taking forward the Trust’s exciting portfolio of expansion opportunities to be delivered under the commercial estates partnership development (CEDP) programme.
Matt Hine, front of house manager
Matt has had a varied career within the NHS, specifically at University Hospital Southampton. Matt has been employed at UHS for over fifteen years and in that time has had roles as a porter, portering supervisor, x-ray library manager, project support officer and traffic and transport manager. This has led Matt to gain great deal of knowledge and experience during his career.
Matt recently became the adjacencies and engagement lead for the recently delivered main entrance retail and ancillary scheme (MERA). This was in partnership with UHS and Interserve Prime. Following the completion of the scheme, Matt has now become the Trust's front of house manager and is responsible for the main reception team, the daily practical issues that are related to the main entrance and the ongoing management and nurturing of the relationship between our retail partners and UHS. His aim is to make sure that the Trust's retail outlets are of mutual benefit to both the partnership commercially and to visitors and patients directly.
Charlotte McCaskie, commercial project manager
Charlotte has worked for the Trust for 17 years and has worked on major projects. She led on the commissioning of the north wing acute medicine unit and project managed areas of the PFI scheme for oncology services.
Within commercial development, Charlotte has led on service developments such as Trust catering, the healthcare at home service and the Complete Fertility service. As a senior contracts manager, she has led on the development of outsourcing services with private hospital providers, including the development of contracts, leading negotiations, and building strong relationships with our neighboring hospitals.
Charlotte has worked across the divisions to help develop commercial services' portfolio, implementing service agreements with new customers to increase divisional income. Charlotte is presently the private patient manager for UHS and is leading the development of a private patient strategy. Her focus is to grow the private patient services, build relationships with our clients and customers, embed new processes and procedures, improve the service quality and experience for our patients and to generate revenue for the NHS.
Aaron Hutchison, commercial project manager
Aaron has extensive NHS and private sector experience with a background in procurement. He joined the Trust in 2008, working on the cancer centre PFI project. Prior to this, he worked in NHS Trusts, NHS procurement hubs and strategic health authorities on procurement, business case development and complex, collaborative and capital projects. These included PFI and public private partnership (PPP) development.
Aaron has worked on various projects in commercial development, predominantly leading on the development and procurement of the IISS project, a managed equipment service for major items of radiology and diagnostic imaging equipment. He now manages this contract along with the replacement programme.
Sarah Jones, strategic developments deputy project manager
Sarah has over 20 years of experience in major UK retail and interiors fit-out developments and construction projects, working on singular projects and large roll-out programmes. For the last nine years, she has developed NHS commercial, local authority and other outside organisation partnerships and worked on procurement contract negotiations. Her focus is on third party provider commercial and funding partnerships, internal stakeholder project relationship management and non-clinical service improvements and implementations.
Sarah worked on the delivery of the recent new main entrance development build project and the on-site management of the shop fit-out and interior design teams. She undertakes subcontractor site logistics management, stakeholder engagement and project management on the Trust's commercial estates development partnership (CEDP) projects.
Nichola Cookson, commercial contracts manager
Nicky has worked at the Trust for 13 years in various administrative roles. Qualified in AAT level 2 accountancy and NVQ4 in business administration, she moved from a leadership role as team leader for specialist medicine and office manager in the respiratory centre and until recently has been part of the chief executive and finance directors’ team. Nicky now has responsibility for all commercial contracts working collaboratively with external companies and Independent private providers. This involves working closely with all divisions and finance managers to ensure that the quality and performance commitments in the contracts are delivered and the services within the Trust are aware of and follow the agreements and processes in the contracts.
