Celebrating 70 years of the NHS in England and 70 years of Southampton General Hospital

On 5 July 2018, trusts around England will come together to celebrate 70 years since the launch of the NHS and the achievements of this amazing service. 2018 also marks an important milestone in the history of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, with it being 70 years since the Borough Hospital (as it was known in 1948) became Southampton General Hospital. As a Trust we will be celebrating throughout the year, with lots of activities and ways for you to get involved.

Westquay - happy birthday to the NHS in Hampshire!

On 23 June, we will be at Westquay shopping centre in Southampton for a birthday open day, hosting other local Trusts and NHS bodies in showcasing the work we do as well as offering a range of activities. The event will run all day in the focal space outside M&S on the ground floor.

More information to follow closer to the date.

NHS70 celebration service

In recognition of 70 years of the NHS, Winchester Cathedral has kindly offered to host a multi-trust celebration service for staff (both past and present) and the public on 5 July from 5.30pm. Staff working in the NHS are invited to attend the service for free, and friends and family are also welcome.

Research and development

As part of the celebrations, and to mark International Clinical Trials Day (ICTD) on 20 May, the research and development department will be holding a small event in the main reception of Southampton General Hospital on Monday, 21 May from 11am to 2pm. The event will help raise public awareness of clinical research in Southampton and highlight how health research has developed and improved healthcare over the past seven decades.

Southampton parkrun

NHS staff are being invited to take part in a special parkrun to celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS. On Saturday 9 June UHS staff and supporters are being invited to run, walk or jog around the 5km course at Southampton Common. There will also be the opportunity to host an information stall or help with refreshments if running isn't your thing. The event begins at 9am and anyone who is interested can register at www.parkrun.org.uk/register/.

Competition: design a birthday cake

As part of our celebrations, we're holding an art competition for local schools and community groups to design us a birthday cake that reflects the diversity and history of the NHS. We would be thrilled if your school or group would like to get involved.

It's free to enter the competition, and the winning cake will be made into a real cake and presented at an event in July, to which the winner and runners up will be invited! Local company The Flutterby Cake Co. has kindly agreed to support this event and will be baking up a storm creating the winning design.
