On 5 July 2018, trusts around England will come together to celebrate 70 years since the launch of the NHS and the achievements of this amazing service. 2018 also marks an important milestone in the history of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, with it being 70 years since the Borough Hospital (as it was known in 1948) became Southampton General Hospital. As a Trust we will be celebrating throughout the year, with lots of activities and ways for you to get involved.
Westquay shopping centre in Southampton played host to our birthday open day on Saturday 23 June, showcasing the work carried out by the NHS across Hampshire.
Shoppers were keen to find out more about the work that goes on across the county by various Trusts and NHS bodies. Visitors had the chance to try their hand at CPR, take part in a research-style experiment, write a birthday wish to the NHS and find out more about the jobs that are available within the organisation.
Representatives involved in the event included:
- University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
- Southampton Hospital Charity
- Think UHS
- Clinical Research in Southampton
- South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust
- Solent NHS Trust
- Southampton City Clinical Commissioning Group
- West Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group
- Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
- Southampton Healthy Living
Manager of communications at University Hospital Southampton Emma Abdulaal who organised the event said: "It was a great opportunity for the public to see the breadth of services that the NHS in Hampshire provides and a fantastic way to kick off a series of events we have planned to mark NHS70."
NHS party at UHS
Parties were staged across University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust sites, to mark the 70th anniversary of the formation of the public health service in 1948.
The main event took place on 5 July outside Southampton General Hospital, which was also celebrating 70 years since it changed its name from the Borough Hospital.
Guests enjoyed a host of party games, face painting and also had a chance to look at memorabilia that had been collected from over the past seven decades and send a birthday wish to the NHS.

NHS70 celebration service
In recognition of 70 years of the NHS, Winchester Cathedralhosted a multi-trust celebration service for staff (both past and present) and the public on 5 July . Staff working in the NHS were invited to attend the service for free, and friends and family were also welcomed.
The service saw UHS staff members Arlene Brady and Claire Shields (pictured below) read inspiring testimonials on what celebrating the NHS at 70 means to them. There was also a performance from the Trust's Filipino choir.
Design a birthday cake competition
As part of our celebrations, we're have been running an art competition for local schools and community groups to design us a birthday cake that reflects the diversity and history of the NHS. We have received dozens of entries and have now got the difficult task of choosing a winner.
The winning cake will be made into a real cake and presented at an event in later in the year, to which the winner and runners up will be invited. Local company The Flutterby Cake Co. has kindly agreed to support this event and will be baking up a storm creating the winning design.
The compettion has now closed, but check back to find out who the winner will be.
We're looking for patient and staff stories from working in or using UHS services over the years. If you or a friend or family member has something to share, whether it's a funny story, an example of how things have changed or anything else you’d like to share with us, we'd love to hear from you.
You can send any stories to email@example.com
We're looking for photographs of all the UHS sites over the years, including Southampton General Hospital, Princess Anne Hospital and Countess Mountbatten House Hospice, so please do share anything with us. We also know how much the uniforms have changed so if you have any photos of you, your friends or family working at UHS that they're happy to share, let us know!
