Nichola Goom

Nichola Goom
I am currently self employed providing support to organisations that provide care and support to those most vulnerable in society, from those with mental health issues to homeless or older people.  Previously I was Chief Executive of a charity called ROCC, worked for a regeneration charity in East London and Macmillan Cancer Support. I have extensive experience of the voluntary and public sector and facilitate many consultation events. I believe in developing and shaping appropriate services for the future and feel I can play an important part in this. I represent providers of services at the Hampshire Health and Wellbeing Partnership Board. I have lived in Hampshire for the last eight years.

There are numerous reasons why I have a huge interest in Southampton General Hospital. I was born in the Princess Anne Hospital, my family and I have been treated in SGH and I am currently a medical student in the hospital. I therefore have interest and knowledge in the running and success of the hospital from both a patient's and a professional's view. I enjoy the opportunity to have an influence on the future of our hospital. I feel that I bring enthusiasm and passion to my position on the Member's Council.

I have been interested in Southampton hospitals since 1950 when I came to the city to be a staff nurse at the Royal South Hants Hospital. I am a registered nurse, midwife and health visitor. At present I am an active member of the League of Friends Royal South Hants Hospital, a committee member and volunteer liaison officer for the league. I feel that my 22 years as a health visitor in the community enables me to be a good listener and communicator.

I have a background in district nursing, both in field and management. After retiring I gained an Open University degree. I was a member of patient and public involvement forum for the Trust, chairing for three years. During this time, the forum made recommendations, accepted by the Trust, for improvements in patient care, including cleanliness, nutrition and waiting times. I am a patient representative on groups, including cancer care, supporting the best for patients and carers. As a result of working with, and knowledge of, the Trust, I have demonstrated my credibility and commitment to the provision of optimum patient care.
