Members' council

The members’ council is the collective body through which executive and non-executive directors explain and justify their actions. It works closely with the Trust Board| to make sure services are meeting the needs of the local community.

The members’ council consists of 23 members who will gather the views of the hospital's members and give them a voice at the highest level of the organisation. These representatives have certain roles and responsibilities| and must carry out statutory duties| .

The first elections were held in March 2009 with the help of the Electoral Reform Society. A total of 181 members nominated themselves for the 17 available elected seats in the public and staff constituencies and nearly 6,000 votes were cast. The members’ council worked in shadow form from March 2009 until we were authorised as a foundation trust| on 1 October.

The members’ council meet in full every three months, and all the meetings are open to the public. They have established working groups on patient experience, staff experience, strategy, membership and engagement strategy, and members’ nominations committee.
