Rest of England and Wales - three representatives
Aelwen Emmett
I have lived in Hampshire for 25 years, during which time I, and my family, have used both private and NHS services. I am a retired senior teacher, with effective and successful communication and management skills. For six years I was a volunteer adviser with the Bishops Waltham CAB. I am aware of the concerns of the local community, which include the provision, and access to, an excellent NHS hospital service. I believe in constructive, honest and open dialogue.

I live in the Meon Valley and underwent a total laryngectomy for cancer at Southampton General Hospital ten years ago, after two years remission following radiotherapy. I now represent patients’ interests on the head & neck site specific group of clinicians covering all Hampshire, Salisbury, Chichester and Isle of Wight and been drawn into various patient partnership groups bringing patients, volunteers and clinicians together to improve services. The professionals I meet have all been receptive to discussing defects and imaginative on solutions, but an NHS hospital is a big ship to manoeuvre and my position on the members’ council allows me to offer personal support and experience.

I have had considerable experience as an NHS patient, attending five different hospitals in the past year. While in many ways I have received first-class treatment, there are some things – particularly on the nursing side – that could be done better and with more sensitivity, and I feel I am well-equipped to speak out for elderly patients. I enjoy contributing to making a stay in hospital less upsetting and more enjoyable.
