Southampton City - five representatives
Rosie Bynam
I am a retired specialist practice nurse with 48 years of nursing experience. I first came to Southampton General Hospital in 1968 and worked at the Wessex Neurological Centre as a ward sister, then on F level, for eight years before becoming a community health advisor to the elderly. I also have been a volunteer, meeting and greeting patients at The Macmillan Centre once a week for the last three and a half years. I therefore have a long association with the Trust. I have also been a patient at Southampton General Hospital, having two knee replacements so as a council member I feel I can offer a patients perspective. The welfare of the patients should always be paramount.

I am a medical practitioner having recently retired. I have been part of the NHS all my working life with experience in most branches of medicine before specialising in public health and management. I am a resident of Southampton having joined my family here. I have been disabled for many years with a mobility problem so I have good experience of the NHS from the patient’s point of view. I feel I am able to put my knowledge to good use in my capacity as a member of the Council.

I have lived in Southampton for over 30 years. I'm married with three adult children and care for an elderly relative. My career has been in nursing, initially as a paediatric ward sister and later working in the community for the Primary Care Trust. I recognise the challenges that face an ever changing NHS in ensuring cost effective, timely and fair access to quality services for all ages, ethnicities and abilities. I am particularly keen to see more co-operative and joined up working between hospital and community care.

Professor Colin Pritchard
After more than 40 years with the NHS, as practitioner, health authority member and professor in psychiatric social work, only when I became an emergency surgical patient did I really understand the patient's perspective! My current research spans cancer and neurological disease; 'patient-focused' outcomes related to understanding staff stresses that lead to patient risk in theatre, and, research that identifies the patient's agenda contributing to improved services. As an informed patient I ask the right questions and believe I am a good representative for fellow patients and citizens, strengthening the patient's perspective as well as understanding staff pressures.

I am a retired secondary school teacher and the primary carer of a downs daughter in whose interest, about 13 years ago I became a trustee of Southampton Mencap, a local charity which provides services and support to families with learning disabilities. Previously, I was also vice chair of Southampton Senior Citizens and closely involved with their work on elderly health care provision in Southampton which I was drawn to after the loss of my father who died following a fall. He suffered from Alzheimer's disease. I have lived and worked in Southampton for over 40 years and in that time have had intimate experience of Southampton General Hospital as a centre of excellence for paediatrics and heart surgery. My principal area of interest is in the care and support of people with learning difficulties; my daughter is 23. I believe in fair play and support wholeheartedly the premise that high quality services require constant dialogue between providers and service users.
