Government minister visits hospital education centre

Government minister John Denham will visit Southampton General Hospital’s education and development department on Monday (27 July).

The Southampton Itchen MP and Secretary of State for Communities will meet staff who are studying on development and training programmes.

Mr Denham will spend time talking to staff about Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust’s work around the Widening Participation in Learning project, which promotes education, training and careers within the NHS locally.

Anita Esser, head of wider healthcare teams education at SUHT, said: “We are very pleased with the progress of our Widening Participation in Learning programme, which supports the Trust’s commitment to the national skills pledge.”

John Denham said: "A recent report shows that we need to do a lot more to make sure young people from middle and lower income families can get into clinical professions.   I welcome the work the Hospital Trust is doing to encourage and support young people to aim high."
