A drive to recruit more pharmacists has been launched by Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The pharmacy department at Southampton General Hospital is urging pharmacists and technicians to come forward and apply for jobs.

Nationally, hospitals are struggling to draw newly qualified staff due to the attractive financial packages offered by community-based pharmacies.

But potential recruits are being advised to look more closely at the benefits of working in the NHS.

Sharron Millen, head of clinical pharmacy at SUHT, said: “Working for the NHS carries many advantages. As well as being part of a big team and working with many other highly skilled pharmacists, we offer permanent and stable contracts and excellent employment benefits.

“Every pharmacist has an annual performance review and can set their education needs and personal development plan to ensure they are continuing to progress as they wish.”

The SUHT pharmacy team celebrated a successful year of achievement in 2008, picking up five prestigious national awards, while the department’s two aseptic preparation services have recently achieved a top audit rating.
