An award-winning consultant surgeon based at Southampton General Hospital has been appointed President of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS).
Consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon Barrie Evans began his one-year presidency in January and will host the prestigious BAOMS annual scientific meeting in Bournemouth from 3 to 5 June.
He will also help host the first joint meeting between BAOMS and the Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India in November.
Mr Evans, who was awarded the Down Surgical Prize by BAOMS for his outstanding career contribution in 2006, specialises in facial and craniofacial trauma, head and neck surgery and skin malignancy.
"I feel immensely privileged and honoured to have been elected by my fellow surgeons to the presidency of BAOMS, particularly when I consider the contribution and stature of my predecessors," Mr Evans said.
"I am looking forward to what I know will be an exciting and challenging year. The appointment of Southampton staff to prestigious national bodies reflects the extremely high quality and calibre of our hospital."
Mr Evans is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh, and fellow of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
