Appeal Day raises over £50,000 for blood cancer unit

The Charity team fundraising at WestQuayOn Friday 4 March individuals, groups, communities and businesses painted the town red for Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal,| raising £50,205.40 for the project to benefit blood cancer patients at Southampton General Hospital, with further pledged money still to be added.

Fundraising activities and events took place across the region and local businesses were each challenged to raise £100 on the day. 

The Red & White Appeal aims to raise £2.2million create a specialist treatment unit for patients with life threatening blood cancers from across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Wiltshire, Dorset, West Sussex and the Channel Islands.

Joan Newman, bone marrow transplant clinical nurse specialist said, “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped fundraise on Red & White Appeal Day to support this vital project. We are delighted with the amount that has been raised towards the Appeal, which really would not have been possible without the generosity of our supporters.” 

With over £830,000 raised to date towards the £2.2million target, the Charity is looking to raise the remaining funds as quickly as possible, so that building work can begin on the state of the art outpatient facilities.

This total includes a grant received last month from the Garfield Weston Foundation.

Jacqui Cammish, fundraising officer at Southampton Hospital Charity said, “We were absolutely delighted to receive such a generous grant towards the Red & White Appeal. The money will make a huge difference to patients receiving treatment for blood cancers, and we’d like to sincerely thank the Garfield Weston Foundation for their very kind support and in bringing us closer to making this project a reality.”
