Family's fundraising thank you for daughter's life-saving care

The Rodway family cheque presentation

Southampton Hospital Charity has benefitted from a generous donation of £4,950.70 from a family keen to thank staff for the treatment of three-year old Lizzie following a road accident.

In February 2010, Lizzie Rodway suffered a serious head injury after an accident on the way home from a family holiday. Initially airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital, Lizzie was later rushed to Southampton General Hospital for specialist treatment. Paralysed on her left side, she spent the next five months receiving life-saving care from teams across Southampton’s dedicated children’s units.

Swelling on the brain meant that Lizzie needed complex neurological surgery and treatment to repair her brain function, however two and a half months after the accident Lizzie was making good physical progress and was working hard with the paediatric physiotherapy team to regain the ability to walk and talk.

Settling into life with Lizzie now back at home, her family were keen to thank the Paediatric Medical Unit and physiotherapy team who cared for her so well, with dad Adrian organising a Coast to Coast sponsored cycle ride in Devon to raise money for these areas of the hospital. Completing the 102-mile challenge from Illfracombe in North Devon to Plymouth in South Devon, over £4,900 was raised by dad Adrian, uncle Neil Rodway, great uncle Paul Guest and three friends.

Adrian Rodway said, “We wanted to raise money for the amazing Paediatric Medical Unit where Lizzie spent the majority of her time in hospital and also the fantastic children’s physiotherapy department who worked tirelessly to get her back on her feet.”

Mum Karen added, “We feel indebted to all of the staff who cared for Lizzie and without such a wonderful team I really think we would not have our beautiful daughter here with us today.”
