Following the success of several fundraising events, 61-year-old Keith Brook, a former patient at Southampton General Hospital, has presented the Acute Medical Unit with a new Ophthalmoscope, costing £450. This will be used to examine patients’ eyes, and can be wall-mounted and fitted between two treatment areas.

Mr Brook and his family held a series of fundraising events including fancy dress parties and raffles, and will be continuing to fundraise in 2010, hoping to raise £2,000 in total for the unit where he recieved care. Following treatment on Southampton General Hospital’s Haematology unit, Keith was admitted to the Acute Medical Unit on several occassions, for 3 or 4 days at a time.

Mark Oakley, Modern Matron for the Acute Medical Unit, said, “It really is nice to see that a patient has appreciated our care, and in return we want to show how their donation is appreciated. I think it is important to demonstrate that the money raised by people like Keith really has done some good.”

Keith Brook said, “I felt that it wasn’t enough to just give a box of chocolates. I really wanted to say thank you for the expert care I received, and make staff and patients’ lives easier. It is fantastic to be able to see where the money has gone, and that it has made a difference.”
