A group of six dedicated fundraisers and employees at Skandia have raised over £2,500 for children’s cancer services, following a 272-mile cycle challenge.
The team embarked on the six-day challenge in July, cycling from Skandia House, Southampton to Paris, and travelling around 50 miles each day.
Their generous donation of sponsorship will go to Southampton Hospital Charity’s Piam Brown Unit fund, to benefit patients and their families on the Children’s cancer unit at Southampton General Hospital.
The Piam Brown Unit is the Wessex Regional Paediatric Oncology and Haematology Centre, treating children with all types of childhood cancers. Caring for children from a day old to 18 years of age, the Unit treats around 90 new patients every year. Southampton Hospital Charity’s Piam Brown Unit fund was chosen by Skandia employees as the local charity of the year for 2010.
Team member Liisa Lehtio said, "We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sponsored us, whether it was in the form of online donation, buying a cake from our cake sale, participating in our quiz night, or seeing us off and welcoming us back when we returned from the trip. We simply couldn’t have done it without you.
"We were lucky enough to have a look around the Piam Brown Unit when we made our donation, and having seen where the money actually goes makes our effort feel a thousand fold more worthy than it did before."
Could you take on the challenge? Southampton Hospital Charity is looking for supporters to take part in a sponsored London to Paris cycle, taking place 4-7 September 2011, to raise funds for charity projects across Southampton General Hospital, the Princess Anne Hospital and in connected services.
