One hundred runners and walkers, including medical staff, patients, adults and children, put their best foot forward last month for Southampton Hospital Charity’s 5km fun run.
The family event held at Sandy Balls holiday centre in the New Forest was kindly sponsored by Aviva, and Southampton Hospital Charity are delighted to announce that £3,802.75 has already been counted in sponsorship from the day.
A number of runners raised funds for the Red & White Appeal|, which aims to raise £2.2million to create a specialist treatment unit for patients with blood cancers from across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Wiltshire, Dorset, West Sussex and the Channel Islands. A total of £2,202 has been raised from the fun run, towards the Appeal so far.
Among those were Consultant Haematologist Dr Matthew Jenner, wife Charlotte and their three young children.
Dr Jenner said, “The whole family had a great day taking part in the Fun Run and the chilldren were thrilled to complete the course. Thanks to family, friends and colleagues who so generously sponsored us.”
“We are all really pleased to support the Red & White Appeal which is raising money to create a dedicated Haematology day unit for patients with blood cancers such as leukaemia, myeloma and related disorders. Many of these patients have numerous visits to the day unit often over many years and a purpose built unit will enable us to provide really high quality, personalised care that meets their needs.”
Fundraising manager, Carrie Bolt said, “We are delighted that so many of our supporters could join us for what proved to be a brilliant day. We would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who took part and has helped to raise money for patients being treated in Southampton’s teaching hospitals, and look forward to welcoming everyone to next year’s event!”
Any outstanding sponsorship money from the event can be posted to Southampton Hospital Charity, Mailpoint 135, Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, SO16 6YD.
