In October 2010, a team of intrepid adventurers will take on the infamous Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Southampton the Princess Anne Hospital.
The team of nurses, family and friends of the unit, led by Divisional Clinical Director, Dr Alyson O’Donnell, are aiming to raise over £100,000 for Southampton Hospital Charity, to improve parental accomodation on the Neonatal Unit.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, based at the Princess Anne Hospital, is a regional centre, and one of the largest in the country, providing specialist care to new born babies from Southampton, Bournemouth, Poole, Chichester, Basingstoke, the Isle of Wight, Salisbury, Winchester and the Channel Islands. Caring for over 600 babies every year, the Neonatal Unit has 36 cots, 20 intensive/high dependency cots and 16 special care cots.
On 8th October, the team will be on their way to Tanzania, home of the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, for the 10 day challenge. Fundraising efforts are well under way, with the team organising cake sales and tombolas at Southampton General Hospital, the first of which raised over £800.
Suzie Pearce, Fundraising Officer for Southampton Hospital Charity said, “It has been fantastic to see such enthusiasm from all of the team who will be climbing Kilimanjaro in October. With the support of the public we hope that the challenge will be a huge success, and will help us to create an environment which exceeds the expectations of patients and visitors on the Neonatal Unit.”
With limited spaces still available for the trek, the team are encouraging supporters to dust of their hiking boots and join the challenge!
