Trevor Sorbie MBE visits Southampton General Hospital's Macmillan Centre

Jane and Trevor Sorbie

Monday 3 August saw hairdressing icon Trevor Sorbie MBE visit Southampton General Hospital’s Macmillan Patient Information Centre.  The esteemed hairdresser, holding the title of British Hairdresser of the Year an unrivalled four times, spent the morning talking to clinical staff about his decision to dedicate the rest of his working life to ‘My New Hair’, his inspiring charity project.  Launched as a non-profit organisation in June 2006, and inspired by Trevor’s personal experience of a loved-one suffering from cancer, My New Hair aims to provide advice and support to those who have suffered from medical hair loss, also offering a wig customisation consultation and cutting service.

Lymington-based hair care product company Herb UK were also in attendance at the seminar, providing information about their specialist organic colouring and after-care treatments, endorsed by My New Hair.

Aiming to widen national awareness of My New Hair and the unique service that it provides, Trevor’s visit saw cancer patientJane receive a live personal cut and style by Trevor himself, transforming a regular wig into a more attractive, personalised style.

Jo Reeves, Macmillan Information and Support Centre Manager at Southampton Hospital, said “The Cancer Care wig service runs from the Macmillan Centre, and we were very proud to host the Trevor Sorbie event.  His passion and commitment helped remind everyone how important hair loss is when patients are already coping with a cancer diagnosis.”

Following Trevor Sorbie’s eye-opening visit, the Macmillan centre at Southampton General is keen to expand its wig fitting service, and train its existing hair stylists to Trevor Sorbie’s initiative, to help to bring this fantastic service within easy reach of cancer patients in the South.
