Wates Community Day helps to boost ward projects

Wates Community Day Team

A generous group of staff from Wates Construction Ltd., one of the UK’s largest family-owned construction services and development companies, have donated labour and materials towards ward projects at Southampton General Hospital and the Princess Anne Hospital.

Wates Community Day is a national event organised by Wates Group, allowing members of staff to be released from building sites and offices to deliver projects for Charitable Organisations within the community, last year contributing over 8,000 hours of hard work to over 70 Charitable Organisations. With this year’s Community Day focusing on the theme of ‘Delivering for Communities’, Wates Group worked closely with Southampton Hospital Charity, to establish the most beneficial projects across Southampton General Hospital and the Princess Anne Hospital.

On the day, Wates staff refurbished a number of rooms, which will help to enhance the patient and staff experience on the wards. In the Elderly Care Unit at Southampton General Hospital, a staff rest room, an equipment store, and the Belinda Smith Room patient lounge were refitted, with work also carried out on the Quiet Room at the Princess Anne Hospital.

Carol Gosling, Matron at the Princess Anne Hospital said, “The Quiet Room is a private space where patients have privacy to come to terms with news of their pregnancy loss. Wates have provided a much less clinical space giving the room a more homely and personal feel. We were impressed by their work ethic and consideration to those working in the area which was very busy on the day.”

Wates staff involved were Jason Wooldridge, Project Manager, along with Peter Collier, Graham Dawson, Paul Goodhew, Steve Hayes, Mechelle Mattack, Nigel Morgan, Leyon Nana, Rob Perry and Peter Willoughby, with Ian and Andy from the Labour Team. Subcontractors also provided labour and materials free of charge on the day, including ACBeck decorators, ATJones Ceilings, Flooring Inspirations carpets, ADT fire alarms, EIC lighting, and GP Masonry who provided general labour.

Wates Project Manager Jason Wooldridge said, “We would like to thank Southampton Hospital Charity for allowing us and our Trade contractors to use our annual Wates community day to improve facilities, which we know will benefit both patients, visitors and staff.”
