NIHR Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility

Embedded at the heart of Southampton General Hospital is an extensive, state-of-the-art clinical research facility with dedicated research nursing teams; the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility.

The facility has the highest safety and quality standards, being one of only four UK publicly funded facilities with full early-phase research accreditation from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulation Authority (MHRA).

A great environment for care and research

The facility's superb patient facilities and status as a full hospital ward make it a safe, comfortable place for adult and family participants to be.

On-call research fellows and quality-assured clinical and laboratory resources enable early-stage and complex late-stage research to be performed with confidence, with over 250 different clinical trials in progress at any one time.

Capacity and resources for commercial research

Flexible clinical space alongside dedicated high-dependency, endoscopy and metabolic study facilities, and in and outpatient paediatric capability, ensures that the facility is a site of choice for commercial and multicentre studies.

Funded by the National Institute for Health Research, the facility is used by investigators from all areas of the Trust, and is core to Southampton's university-hospital partnership.
