Experience

Miss Manners is a consultant ophthalmologist with a special interest in oculoplastics (eyelid, tear drainage and orbital disorders). She trained in ophthalmology in London and the Wessex region with specialist oculoplastics training at Moorfields Eye Hospital and in Vancouver. She was appointed as consultant in ophthalmology at University Hospital Southampton in 1994.

Key achievements

Miss Manners is lead consultant for the Southampton oculoplastics service, which she established in 1994. The service now comprises three consultants, one fellow and one specialist nurse. It receives referrals locally and from surrounding countries. 

She is a member of the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPRS) and a founder member of the British Oculoplastics Surgical Society (BOPSS). Between 2007 and 2011 she was the regional representative of BOPSS for south west England, Wales and the Channel Islands. She is a regular invited speaker on national oculoplastics courses.

Miss Manners has been running an oculoplastics fellowship training post since 1986 jointly with Salisbury eye department, which attracts international applicants. She is a joint lead of the annual Royal College of Ophthalmologists' higher surgical training course in oculoplastics. 

She was the consultant clinical service lead for ophthalmology 2003-6, the medical appraisal lead for ophthalmology 2011-14 and clinical governance consultant lead for ophthalmology 2009-2011. In 2013 she was elected as one of the 'three wise men' for the Trust.

Research

Miss Manners has over 40 peer reviewed publications and has given many presentations on eyelid reconstruction, ptosis, orbital disorders and facial palsy. Her research includes work on lid tumours, lacrimal disorders, eyelid malpositions (ptosis, ectropion, entropion) and facial nerve palsy.
