Dr Patel has worked for Southampton University Hospitals Trust since 1997.

A consultant gastroenterologist for 12 years with interest in luminal gastroenterology and endoscopy. Was lead for GI/endoscopy for 7 years. Currently training lead for endoscopy and run JAG approved national endoscopy courses at Southampton. I am Director of the Hampshire bowel cancer screening programme, the Regional SHA lead for endoscopy and sit on national governance board for bowel cancer screening programme

Key achievements

Developments in endoscopy services at SUHT
Support of every endoscopy unit in SHA for GRS, JAG and  bowel cancer screening accreditation
Development of the HICCs endoscopy tool/virtual GI clinics
Development in therapeutic endoscopy including, endoscopic mucosal resection, Spyglass and radiofrequency (HALO) ablation for early GI cancer


Approximately 30 publications on endoscopy, role of inflammatory mediators in upper GI tract, screening and cost-effective models of care

Dr Patel is a member of the Oesophageal section of the British Society of Gastroenterology and is medical advisor to the National and local Barrett's Oesophagus Campaign charities.
