- Senior registrar in rheumatology at Southampton General Hospital, 1996 to 1998
- Visiting assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology, University of California, San Francisco, 1998
- Senior registrar in rheumatology at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.
Professor Arden has worked for University Hospital Southampton since February 2000.
Professor Arden runs a large research programme into the causes and treatment of osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as a large clinical trials programme for the management of these conditions.
He has written the European and International guidelines for the diagnosis and management of osteoarthritis.
