Mr Somani is an associate professor and a consultant urological surgeon. He has worked for the Trust since March 2012.

Mr Somani is the clinical lead for the endourology unit, with responsibility for running the stone clinics, operating lists, multidisciplinary team (MDT) and lithotripsy (using ultrasound waves to break down kidney stones) services (SWL). He is a high volume surgeon and performs more than 200 ureteric or renal endoscopic procedures per year, specializing in paediatric stone surgery. He has performed more than 1000 ureteroscopy procedures and started the 'Ultra-mini PCNL' in the south of England with published results. His ureteroscopy outcomes show a stone free rate of 96%, a minor complication rate of 4%, and 78% of patients discharged the same day.

Mr Somani performs elective and emergency stone surgery, including complex stones, bilateral stones and regional referrals. Mr Somani keeps a comprehensive database of his patients, contributing to national audits and publishing outcomes in peer-reviewed journals.

His main interests are in stone disease, benign prostate disorders, urinary tract infections, haematuria (blood in urine) and general urology.

Mr Somani has developed a portfolio of activities to raise public awareness of the symptoms, prevention and treatment of kidney stones, including BBC Radio 4's Inside Health programme, BBC South television and ITV Meridian news. He has also written numerous national newspaper articles, book chapters and publications.

Mr Somani has produced over 160 peer reviewed publications, over 250 published abstracts and four book chapters.

He is on the editorial board of three journals and a reviewer for 15 journals (Including British, American and European Urological journals). He is also the head of field for urology on the BMedSc research course at Southampton. 

Mr Somani is the audit lead for the unit and is the investigator for PUrE lower pole stone treatment trial, PHOTO bladder cancer trial, PROMiS prostate cancer trial amongst others.

Mr Somani published one of the first papers in the world on upper tract PDD using oral 5ALA for upper urinary tract tumour diagnosis. His papers on testicular torsion, erectile dysfunction, haematuria and penile length measurement are among the largest series in the UK. Mr Somani has also published his outcomes and systematic reviews on various aspects of ureteroscopy (over 30 papers to date).
