Experience

Dr Afzal has worked for Southampton University Hospitals Trust since October 2004. 

Specialist training in paediatric gastroenterology and hepatology in Great Ormond Street, Barts and the London, Royal Free Hospital and Kings College Hospital. I served as fellow for UCL, for research in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease. My other research interests include inflammatory disorders of the paediatric foregut and enteropathies (including diarrhoeal disorders in children)

Key achievements

1. Offer diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy to children in Hampshire
2. Establishing paediatric hepatology services in Southampton University Hospital NHS Trust
3. Establishing the Wessex Paediatric Gastroenterology Network and currently Treasurer of the Network
4. Serve as member of the National Paediatric Inflammatory bowel diseases and Research groups (BSPGHAN)
5. Invited lecturer to MSc Paediatric Gastroenterology, Barts, London
6. Paediatric advisor to Humanity First International disaster relief and Humanity First Medical team projects in Africa

Over 20 Medline publications focused on paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition
