Experience

Mr Dunlop has worked for Southampton University Hospitals Trust since May 2002.

Douglas Dunlop is a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon and honorary senior clinical lecturer at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust (SUHT). He graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1990 (with surgical distinction) and Trained in Orthopaedics in Edinburgh, with his MD awarded (with distinction) in 2001 from the University of Edinburgh, entitled: “Mechanical and biological aspects of impaction bone grafting in revision hip surgery and the use of a new synthetic bone graft”. He is the lead orthopaedic clinician for Research & Development at SUHT.

Douglas has a particular interest in the make-up of bone and bone substitutes and has been able to undertake collaborative research in this field, both in this country and in Australia, which has increased the understanding of revision surgery. He has had the oportunity to undertake stem cell research with this group, supervising students in his role as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, in collaboration with University Orthopaedics (Professor Cyrus Cooper, Dr Richard OC Oreffo, University of Southampton - Bone and Joint Group), as a direct extension of his MD thesis. Two trainee orthopaedic surgeons undertaking this research were awarded their MD’s in 2008.

Research

As an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in revision hip surgery it is not unusual to come across patients with critical bone loss. Research with this group is focussed around development of biomimetic scaffolds and improvement of traditional (donor) bone graft techniques through: stem cell augmentation; mechanical impaction enhancement; synthetic material utilisation; and signal potentiation. As a group, we have reached the stage where we have performed several translational procedures on human volunteers in the operating theatre, with early, published results. We have approached Research Councils for funding (BBSRC/EPSRC/MRC) and are in discussion with industry having registered patents for the techniques. The future potential is real and exciting.
