Latham, Mr Jeremy
MA MCh FRCS(Orth)
Speciality
Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery
Sub-speciality
Adult hip reconstruction including hip replacement, hip resurfacing and revision hip surgery
Training and Education
My undergraduate training was at Oxford University. I went to Adelaide as a Research Fellow and completed my orthopaedic training in Birmingham, Toronto and Oxford.
Experience
Mr Latham has worked for Southampton University Hospitals Trust since August 1998.
After specialist training in Birmingham, I did fellowships in Oxford and Toronto. I was appointed to develop a specialist hip service in Southampton and my areas of expertise are hip replacement, hip resurfacing and revision surgery.
There have been enormous advances in hip surgery in the last few years. New materials and techniques such as hip resurfacing have transformed the treatment of hip arthritis, particularly in younger adults. I introduced hip resurfacing into the region, and have done over 600 of them since I started in 1998. I do about 300 hip operations a year, including hip replacements, hip resurfacing and complex hip revision surgery.
Key achievements
I was awarded the degree of Master of Surgery at Oxford for research work into lumbar spine disc degeneration and instability. During my training in Birmingham, I developed an interest in hip surgery, and saw the potential of a new technique of hip resurfacing. When I was appointed to Southampton I introduced the technique to the region. This has revolutionized the treatment of osteoarthritis of the hip in younger patients, and I have one of the largest personal series in the UK of this procedure. I have lectured on the technique at meetings in the UK, India, Belgium and Australia.
Together with my colleagues we have developed a specialist hip arthroplasty service. We offer a tertiary referral service for complex hip problems including dysplasia, young adult hip disorders and treatment of periprosthetic fractures.
