Experience
Professor Macklon has worked for Southampton University Hospitals Trust since October 2009.
Professor Macklon holds the Chair in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Southampton, and is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Director of the Southampton Fertility and Periconceptional Medicine Unit.
After completing his MD thesis and residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and a fellowship in Fetomaternal Medicine in Rotterdam, Nick Macklon was appointed Consultant Gynaecologist and head of the Assisted Conception Unit at the Erasmus University Medical Centre, Rotterdam. In 2005 he was appointed to the Chair of Infertility and Periconceptional Medicine at the University Medical Centre, Utrecht, The Netherlands, where he led the largest IVF unit in the Netherlands, and set up the first Dutch transport service in pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, and first integrated service in Periconceptional Medicine in Europe. In 2008 became Head of the Department of Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecology.
His external appointments have included membership of the ESHRE Advisory Board, Chairman of the ESHRE Special Interest Group on Reproductive Endocrinology, Associate Editor of Human Reproduction and External Assessor for the University of Valencia. In 2008 he founded the Dutch Society for Reproductive Medicine.
Research
His research interests include ovarian stimulation, implantation and periconceptional determinants of fertility and health, areas in which he has published extensively in peer reviewed journals and international standard textbooks. He has edited two textbooks, including the prize winning ‘IVF in the Medically Complicated Patient, and the recently published ‘Textbook of Periconceptional Medicine’. He is internationally recognised as a leading authority in infertility and as a pioneer in the field of Periconceptional Medicine
