Experience
Mr Rew has worked as a Consultant Surgeon Southampton University Hospitals Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer to the University of Southampton since 1989.
He is a broadly trained and experienced Consultant in General, Emergency and Trauma Surgery,
He is regularly called upon by the Defence Medical Services for work for the Armed Forces overseas, with whom he has been awarded a range of operational medals, for work in the Gulf in 1991 and 2003, and in Afghanistan in 2008.
He plays a leading role in the work of the Breast, Endocrine and General Surgical Teams at SUHT.
He also supports the work of the New Forest Community Hospitals, and the NHS Independent Treatment Centre at the Royal South Hants Hospital.

He represents the Trust and the surgical profession nationally and internationally on a number of major bodies, which have included ;
The BMA Armed Forces Committee
The Council of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland;
The Committee for Publication Ethics, founded by the BMA.
The Association of Cancer Surgeons (BASO), which he led as the National Secretary from 2000-2002.
He has been Editor in Chief of the EJSO, formerly the European Journal for Surgical Oncology since 2003, and leads international editorial and advisory board meetings at a range of European centres.
He teaches in the UK and overseas on aspects of specialist scientific research and writing for publication, most recently in India.
Within the Trust, he works as the Lead Clinician for Research and Development within the Division of Surgery, and with the Trauma Working Group.
He has developed and leads on the Southampton Breast Unit Charity Appeal.

He has a wide range of research interests in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and a specialist interest in the applications of laser cytometry in the study of cancer biology
He was awarded a Master of Surgery (MChir) Degree in 1991 from the University of Cambridge for his thesis:
“The in vivo proliferation kinetics of human solid tumours”
He has more than 80 cited papers in PubMed
He also writes widely on other professional matters, including those related to Trauma Surgery and the work of the Armed Forces. His book “Blood Heat and Dust” on the work of the Defence Medical Services in Iraq was published by Avonworld in 2005
