After general medical and radiology training I spent 18 months at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and developed an interest in Musculaskeletal Radiology . After nearly 3 years as a Consultant in General Radiology in Winchester, I moved to Southampton to concentrate on bone and joint disorders and have become increasingly involved in the radiology of trauma and spinal disease, particularly interventional spinal procedures.
Key achievements
Since appointment here 14 years ago I have essentially built up musculoskeletal radiology as specialist area in this Trust. From baseline of basic plain film and some MR imagining I now lead a team of consultant, fellowship level and junior medial staff and paramedical in delvering a high quality specialist service both within the Trust and for tertiary referrals around the region including Primary Care. I have developed a spinal intervention service from scratch and now attract referrals for intervertional disc procedures in the cervical and lumbar spine, diagnostic and therapeutic nerve root blocks, biopsies, and spinal cyst aspiration.
I have devised and implemented the first UK whole body CT polytrauma imaging protocol which I have audited extensively since 1997, published nationally and have spoken on at many regional and national meetings and now am a member of RCR Trauma Standards Accreditation Committee preparing follow-up to the NCPod Trauma report of 2007. Expected to complete end of 2008.
My complication rates for discopgraphy are consistently low with infection in 3 out of > 1800 discs compared with published incidence of 1.5%.
