Dr Smedley has worked for Southampton University Hospitals Trust since March 1993.

Broad-based background in hospital medicine up to MRCP(UK). Accredited specialist in Occupational Medicine. Experience in directing a large multi-disciplinary Occupational Health and Safety Service including an income-generating portfolio. Active in academic occupational medicine, post-graduate training and undergraduate teaching with honorary Senior Lecturer appointment University of Southampton. Editorial experience in medical publishing including Asst Editor of journal "Occupational Medicine". Active nationally in the production of evidence-based clinical guidelines and audits for NICE, Occupational Health Clinical Effectiveness Unit.

Key achievements

Leading a successful Occupational Health Service at SUHT. Lead author of Oxford Handbook of Occupational Medicine. Clinical lead on national Evidence-based guidelines on the management of dermatitis at work, and first national audit of the management of low back pain at work  

Research

Published original research papers on low back pain and neck/shoulder pain in nurses, respiratory symptoms in radiographers and influenza immunisation in health care workers. Reviews on formaldehyde and respiratory disease, latex allergy, respiratory illness in agricultural workers, occupational surveillance schemes, and neck/shoulder pain.
