Trained in Medicine in Glasgow, moving to Southampton in 1982. - main clinical interests are in multiple myeloma, general haematology, the haematological problems of the elderly and haematology in primary care.  Led the production of national guidelines for the care of multiple myeloma.  As National Clinical Lead - taking a lead role in promoting ways to modernise cancer follow up and clinical services in haematology to manage increasing demand and changing patient expectations.  Research interests - the measurment of Health-related Quality of Life as outcome measure in Haematological malifgmancy. Formerly Clinical Director of Pathology Services in Southampton from 1998-2003.  .

Dr Smith has worked for Southampton University Hospitals Trust since May 1982. 

 

Key achievements

Co-authored 2 textbooks on Haematology & written several educational reviews for primary care journals. Examiner for the Royal College of Pathologists  Conducted (& led 3/4) 4 successful postgraduate MRCPath training courses in Jeddah for the RCPath(1996 - 2001) Education of myeloma patients & carers through invited presentations at seminars run by the Myeloma (UK)) since 1998 Clinical adviser to CancerBackup & Myeloma(uk)-  ICordinated a Haematology-Palliative Care symposium at annual British Society for Haematology meeting in 2006 & an RCPath symposium on Haematology chronic disease managment in June 2008  Delivered a number of invited lectures on myeloma, service modernisation or haematology in the elderly - regionally & nationally to groups including the Association of Clinical Pathologists & British Geriatric Society during 2007-8. Cancer Peer Reviewer - as part of national programme.
