Enteral feeding tubes refresher course
Course description
To become a registered nurse, nurses will have gained competencies in relation to enteral nutrition and enteral tubes during their pre-registration (essential skills cluster: nutrition and fluid management).
This is a refresher course including workshops designated to the practical placement of naso-gastric and gastrostomy re-placement. You will develop knowledge, skills and understanding of all aspects of enteral feeding. You will learn about a whole range of enteral tubes and be able to identify the clinical decisions made what, why and how a tube is placed.
Trouble shooting session to enable problem solving in the event of problems.
Aims and outcomes
On completion of this course you should be able to:

Understand the decision making process of assessment, suitability, equipment required, feeding methods and ethical dilemmas in relation to enteral feeding

Discuss key issues relating to informed consent and professional accountability

Identify the main types of enteral tubes used within SUHT

Understand placement techniques of all enteral tubes

Recognise and understand clinical governance issues and risks, infection prevention, tube occlusion and complications

Know what to do if problems identified
