Intravenous drug administration (central and peripheral)
Course description
Interactive scenario based sessions on the subjects covered in the precourse self-directed workbook. The workbook must be completed prior to attending the study day.
Subjects covered include:

accountability

risks associated with intravenous therapy
-
care of central lines
-
central line drug administration
-
drug compatibilities
-
drug calculations
-
basic fluid management
-
blood transfusions
-
patient controlled analgesia
Aims and outcomes
During the day there will be a MCQ test paper and a drug calculation test paper.
The student will have to pass the MCQ paper and drug calculation paper before going on to achieve competencies in practice.
Competencies should be achieved within three to six months after attending the study day. A photocopy of the full completed competency document should be brought or sent to the clinical skills department and a Trust authority to practise certificate will be issued.
Target audience
The course has been designed for newly qualified nursing staff, Trust staff who do not hold an IV certificate, or those who want an in-depth update in IV drug administration.
Prerequisites
Assessor in practice required. Pre-course workbook to be completed prior to attending day.
