Intravenous drug administration (peripheral only)
Course description
Interactive scenario based sessions based on the subjects covered in the pre-course self-directed workbook. The workbook must be completed prior to attending the study day.

Drug calculations

Basic fluid management

Blood transfusions

Patient controlled analgesia
Aims and outcomes
During the one day session there will be a MCQ test and a drug calculation test.
The student will have to pass the MCQ paper and drug calculation paper before going on to achieve competencies in practice.
Competencies should be achieved within three to six months after attending the study day. A photocopy of the full completed document should be brought or sent to the clinical skills department and a Trust authority to practise certificate will be issued.
Target audience
The course has been designed for newly qualified nursing staff, trust staff required to give peripheral IV drugs or those who do not hold an IV certificate.
Prerequisites
Assessor in practice required. Pre-course workbook must be completed prior to course.
