Introduction to history taking and physical assessment

Course description

Taking a clinical history, physical examination and documentation for the following systems:

  • Day 1 - Cardiovascular
  • Day 2 - Respiratory
  • Day 3 - Neurological
  • Day 4 - Abdominal and candidate assessment
On all the days there will be the opportunity to practice history taking and physical assessment skills with patients and simpatients.
 
Aims and outcomes
  • Learn and use the principles of a structured patient history.
  • Perform a structured physical examination.
  • Identify normal and common abnormal findings while conducting a patient examination.
  • Document findings.
 
Target audience
Healthcare practitioners band 5 and above, with 12 months post registration experience. Practitioners should have direct contact with patients and have some responsibility for patient assessment.
 
Prerequisites

All candidates should have good knowledge in anatomy and physiology as this is not formally taught on the course. Support in the workplace with an experienced facilitator is strongly recommended.
