Nasogastric tube feeding study day

Course description

This course covers:

  • Decision to NG feed
  • Risk management
  • Dysphagia awareness
  • NG feeding
  • Device refresher, complications and trouble shooting and practical workshop and sessions
 
Aims and outcomes

When enteral feeding via the nasogastric route, nursing staff are able to commence and maintain such treatment safely, knowledeably and competently. Achieved by:

  • Understanding the decision making process, key issues relating to informed consent and professional accountability.
  • Understanding principles of enteral feeding via NGT including assessment, suitability, equipment used, feeding methods, related anatomy and physiology, including safe swallow.
  • Understands risks, infection prevention, tube occlusion, diarrhoea and refeeding syndrome.
  • Demonstrate competency of NGT passage during practical sessions and discuss ongoing care and maintenance of a patient with a NGT.
