Paediatric venepuncture and cannulation

Course description

The course covers:

  • Anatomy and physiology revision
  • Accountability and professional issues
  • Equipment selection and access information
  • Complications and infection control issues
  • Distraction and play
  • Constraint and holding
  • Practical sessions.
 
Aims and outcomes

Provide the student with updated knowledge and practical skill to be able to safety take blood and cannulate paediatric patients.

 
Target audience

This workshop has been designed for any member of staff who is required to undertake paediatric venesection and/or cannulation as part of their day-to-day practice.

 
Prerequisites

Pre-course reading and pre-course questionnaire (that will be sent to you) must be completed prior to attending the study day.

Please note:

  • The applicant must have a named assessor prior to attending this half day
  • Competency must be achieved within a three to six month period from close of study day
  • A certificate from the clinical skills department to demonstrate that the student has attended and completed the requirements of the day, will be issued to the student once they have had all their competencies signed off
  • The clinical skills department will require copies of the completed competency document prior to a certificate being issued to them.
