VTE mechanical thromboprophlaxis (Theory)

Course description

Theory and practical elements to be delivered as department based teaching session for nursing staff and clinical support staff. Competency assessment supported by nurse education team.

 
Aims and outcomes

Theory competencies:

  • To understand indications and contra-indications for mechanical thromboprophylaxis
  • To understand the correct use of anti-embolism stockings
  • To understand the correct use of intermittent pneumatic compression

  Practical competencies:

  • To understand the correct measuring and fitting of anti-embolism stockings
  • To understand the correct measuring and fitting of intermittent pneumatic compression
 
Target audience
  • All qualified nurses and midwives (theory and practical competencies)
  • Medical staff (all grades) (theory competencies only)
  • All pharmacists if role includes prescribing mechanical thromboprophylaxis (theory competencies only)
  • Unqualified nursing staff and HCAs (theory and practical competencies)
