Child protection level 3: topic specific - physical abuse course
Course description
In depth analysis of the individual topic. All health staff have a key role to play in safeguarding children and young people 0-18 years from physical abuse.
Staff will learn about a range of physical injuries including bruising, fractures, burns, scalds, intra-oral injuries, abusive bites, head injuries, subdural haematomas, rentinal haemorrhages. The course covers the importance of detailed history taking, mechanisms of injury, photographing, consent, signs, symptoms, medical examinations and the importance of speaking to children away from the parents or carers, highlighting the absolute necessity to always focus on the child and duty of care to the child
Aims and outcomes
By the end of the course you will:

understand the importance of history taking and full examinations of children who may have been abused

recognise features of a child's presentation that might suggest abuse

have a knowledge of the characteristics of pathology associated with child abuse

demonstrate a good working knowledge of all aspects of physical abuse and apply theory to practice to protect the child
Target audience
Level 2 and 3: For all staff who work predominantly with children, young people and their parents or carers. And health staff who have particular responsibilities in relation to undertaking S47 enquiries, including consultants, paediatricians and registrars, senior nursing staff managers and staff who work with complex cases.
