Child protection level 3: topic specific - radiological aspects course
Course description
In depth analysis of the individual topic. Staff will learn:

how to identify abusive fractures and bone injuries

how abusive fractures usually result from the more extreme forms of violence or trauma and represent serious injury
The course explores prevalence of fractures in and patterns of injury in abuse. The relationship between cause and effect is explored along with the importance of history compatibility with mechanism of injury.
Aims and outcomes
By the end of the course you will:

have an increased knowledge and awareness of abusive fractures and bony injuries

know the mechanisms required for the production of such an injruy

be aware of the need to correlate the above with the proposed mechanism of its production i.e. history

be confident in actioning their concerns in this context and know where to access expert advice and help at SUHT

demonstrate increased knowledge regarding recognition and early identification of abusive fractures and implementation into practice to protect children
Target audience
Level 2 and 3: For all staff who work predominantly with children, young people and their parents or carers. And health staff who have particular responsibilities in relation to undertaking S47 enquiries, including consultants, paediatricians and registrars, senior nursing staff managers and staff who work with complex cases.
