Child protection level 3: topic specific - risk factors and hidden harm course

Course description

In depth analysis of the individual topic. All health staff working with children have a key role to play in protecting children and young people 0-18 years from the impact of hidden harm and risk factors such as drug or alcohol misuse, mental health issues, social isolation, domestic violence and any issue relating to poor parenting capacity.

Staff will explore the effects on children from hidden harm, the consequences and the intergenerational perpetuity. The case explores the legislation and policy driving the hidden harm agenda and the challenges to working with families. Staff will take part in group exercises analysing evidence from serious case reviews and actively working through case study scenarios.

 
Aims and outcomes

By the end of the course you will:

  • understand the term hidden harm and its implications for safeguarding children
  • have increased skills and confidence in identifying and responding to children at risk from hidden harm
  • have an increased awareness of the importance of effective inter-agency and inter-professional working in relation to families where there is the possibility of hidden harm risks
  • demonstrate a raised awareness of and competence in practice in safeguarding children where there are hidden harm risks
 
Target audience

Level 2 and 3: For all staff who work predominantly with children, young people and their parents or carers. And health staff who have particular responsibilities in relation to undertaking S47 enquiries, including consultants, paediatricians and registrars, senior nursing staff managers and staff who work with complex cases.
