Dos and don'ts

  • Do make further checks as part of your normal job, but you must stop if you find clear evidence that suggests fraud may be occurring. To do anything more might prejudice future proceedings.
  • Do report your concerns immediately that you have evidence suggesting fraud. Failure to do so may mean that evidence is lost and (if offences are actually being committed) the losses are greater.
  • Do keep any evidence that you may have in a safe place until it can be safely passed to the local counter fraud specialist (LCFS).
  • Don't be afraid to talk through your concerns with the LCFS. It is better to do this and find that there is no reason to be concerned than to fail to report something and allow someone to continue defrauding the Trust.
  • Don't start your own investigation. There are strict legal guidelines which need to be followed by an investigator.
  • Don't discuss your concerns with other people. You don't know who may be involved if fraud is being committed and it is much more difficult to keep information confidential if everyone knows that you have been talking about your suspicions.
