First aid HSE
Course description
On completion of training, successful candidates should be competent in:
-
basic life support
-
recognising the presence of major illness and applying general first aid principles in its management.
In addition, candidates should be able to demonstrate the correct first-aid management of:
-
soft tissue injuries
-
injuries to bones including suspected spinal injuries
-
chest injuries
-
burns and scalds
-
eye injuries including how to irrigate an eye
-
sudden poisoning and anaphylactic shock
Aims and outcomes
-
To recognise and safely position an unconscious casualty
-
To be able to perform adult basic life support to the latest Resuscitation Council guidelines
-
To be able to recognise and treat common workplace injuries such as burns, soft tissue injuries
-
To be able to treat a casualty with a foreign body to their eye
-
To be able to identify and manage musculoskeletal injuries
-
To manage the scene of a first aid emergency
-
To be able to complete accident simple records required by the Trust
-
To know the various ways that assistance can be sought in a workplace emergency
Target audience
Any member of staff. The need for first aiders should be highlighted during risk assessment and safety audit.
Course type
Classroom with emphasis on practical skills.
Please note, work areas in the Trust that are identified as having a higher risk rating should contact the course facilitator to discuss their individual training needs over and above this basic training. Examples of this may include potential falls from height, chemical spillage etc.
