Moving and handling: Train the trainer (clinical lead)

Course description

This course is run by the Trust's moving and handling advisor and will help attendees:

  • identify employers and employees responsibilities with regard to manual handling
  • identify the factors and processes associated with moving and handling risk assessments
  • ensure safe systems of work are in place and preventative measures are undertaken following incidents or near misses
  • identify an ergonomic approach to moving and handling in relation to improving working postures, including how to maintain musculoskeletal health and good back care.

The course includes practical training of safe moving and handling techniques, including:

  • facilitation of independent movement
  • sit to stand
  • lateral transfers
  • movement of patients in beds or trollies
  • managing the falling or fallen patient
  • use of appropriate equipment for example profiling beds, hoisting equipment or slide sheets.
 
 
Aims and outcomes

This course aims to make staff aware of:

  • current legislation and trust policy
  • the law and their duty of care
  • how to complete appropriate moving and handling risk assessments.

Attendees will also be given an insight into the anatomy of the spine and told how to avoid long and short term musculoskeletal injury.

On completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • demonstrate their knowledge of current legislation and understand what their duty of care involves
  • understand the effect of poor movement techniques and posture on their spine
  • demonstrate good moving and handling techniques using safe and stable posture and the use of relevant equipment
  • demonstrate their knowledge of the physical effects of poor practices
  • understand the principles of risk assessments for both moving and handling and how they relate to health and safety legislation and NHSLA compliance

Prerequisites
  • Nomination by care group manager or divisional head of nursing
  • All three days must be attended
