Moving and handling refresher training for clinical leads
Course description
Moving and handling refresher training by the Trust moving and handling advisor and specialist representatives. To provide nominated clinical care group leads for moving and handling with an update of information. This can then be cascaded to their departmental clinical/non-clinical link moving and handling co-ordinators at pre-arranged care group moving and handling training sessions.
Course content:

Refresher information of employers and employees responsibilities under the manual handling operations regulations and other health and safety legislation and appropriate legislation and specialist advice as defined in trust policies

Ensure the factors and processes associated with moving and handling risk assessments are in place (to include NHSLA/Trust compliance of requirements of patient’s mobility assessments, bariatric care plans and inanimate loads) and ensure safe systems of work and preventative measures are implemented following moving and handling, adverse incident or near miss collated from trust statistics

Refresher of an ergonomic approach to moving and handling in relation to improving working postures, how to maintain musculoskeletal health and good back care

Refresher practical training in various methods of patient moving and handling and the use of appropriate equipment
Aims and outcomes
Aims of the course:

To be able to cascade effective training of safe practices in moving and handling, for both patient and inanimate loads to nominated departmental moving and handling link co-ordinators and other appropriate care group staff

To highlight the risk of injury of unsafe practices

To make staff aware of current legislation and trust policy

The law and their duty of care

Demonstrate how to complete appropriate moving and handling risk assessments

Give them an insight into the anatomy of the spine and explain how to avoid long term and short term musculoskeletal injury
On completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

Demonstrate their knowledge of current legislation and understand what their duty of care involves

Understand the effects of poor techniques/pattern movements and posture on their spine and the risk to the service users

Be able to practically demonstrate good moving and handling techniques using safe and stable posture and the use of relevant equipment, be aware of the physical effects of poor practices
-
Understand the principles of risk assessment for both moving and handling of people and inanimate objects, its’ importance and how it relates to the Health and Safety Legislation and NHSLA compliance in order to reduce risk of injury
