Moving and handling: train the trainer (non-clinical lead)

Course description

Moving and handling training by the Trust's moving and handling adviser and specialist advisers, to provide nominated non-clinical lead for moving and handling with a generic update of information, in order that they use this to be cascaded to their departmental staff at pre-arranged moving and handling training sessions.

 

Course content includes:

  • identify employers and employees responsibilities under the manual handling operations regulations and other health and safety legislation and appropriate legislation and specialist advice as defined in Trust policies. 
  • identify the factors and processes associated with moving and handling risk assessments (to include NHSLA/Trust compliance of requirements of inanimate loads) and ensure safe systems of work are in place and preventative measures are undertaken following moving and handling adverse incident or near miss.
  • identify an ergonomic approach to moving and handling in relation to improving working postures, how to maintain musculoskeletal health and good back care.
  • practical training in various methods of safe moving and handling techniques of inanimate loads and the use of appropriate equipment.
 
Aims and outcomes
  • to be able to cascade effective training of safe practices in moving and handling for inanimate loads to their departmental staff to highlight the risk of musculoskeletal injury of unsafe practices
  • to make staff aware of current legislation and Trust policy, the law and their duty of care, how to complete appropriate moving and handling risk assessments, give them an insight into the anatomy of the spine and explain how to avoid long term and short term musculoskeletal injury.

 

On completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • demonstrate their knowledge of current legislation and understand what their duty of care involves
  • understand the effects of poor techniques/pattern movements and posture on their spine and the risk to the service users
  • be able to practically demonstrate good moving and handling techniques using safe and stable posture and the use of relevant equipment
  • be aware of the physical effects of poor practices
  • understand the principles of risk assessment for both moving and handling of people and inanimate objects, its importance and how it relates to the Health and Safety Legislation and NHSLA compliance in order to reduce risk of injury
