Medical terminology (introduction) course

Course description

This is a two day course with the purpose of providing secretaries, medical secretaries, ward clerks and other medical support workers with the basic knowledge of medical terminology in the different specialist areas to assist their professional development in the workplace.

 
Aims and outcomes

This course aims to:

  • give students an understanding of terminology (words and abbreviations) used by doctors and nurses
  • give students the skills to break down medical words into component parts in order to assess the words meaning

Basic anatomy will be covered along with some information of various disease processes. This will make the words relevant to the student .

  • By the end of the course participants will be able to:
  • understand terminology used in the medical environment
  • break words down to help assess their meaning
  • identify various parts of the anatomy and give the appropriate medical term
  • expand and understand some of the more common abbreviations used
  • understand prescription abbreviations
  • have the ability to build on this knowledge
