Immediate life support course
Course description
This Resuscitation Council UK course provides healthcare professionals with the essential knowledge and skills to manage adult patients in cardiac arrest for the short time before the arrival of a cardiac arrest team or other experienced medical assistance. The course also prepares healthcare professionals for the role of cardiac arrest team member.
Aims and outcomes
By the end of the course the healthcare personnel will:

be able to recognise a critically ill patient using an ABCDE approach, and

be able to deal with a cardiopulmonary resuscitation, simple airway management and safe defibrillation (manual or AED), enabling them to manage patients in cardiac arrest until arrival of a cardiac arrest team and to participate as members of that team.
Target audience
At Southampton the immediate life support course (ILS) is run as a multi-disciplinary course and is recommended for all staff who take charge of acute clinical areas and/or hold the cardiac arrest bleep.
Prerequisites
You will be sent a multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ) with confirmation of your place. You must complete the MCQ before coming on the course.
There are new guidelines for 2011 and we will be sending a new MCQ for these classes, please ensure you complete the correct MCQ.
We no longer send out manuals prior to the course. You can read a manual in the reference section of the library, loan one from the library, or purchase one from the resus office, E level, centre block (CE90), for £5.

No charge to UHS employees.
A non attendance fee of £50 may be charged to your care group if you do not advise us by email or phone if you are unable to attend.
