Immediate life support (ILS) recertification course

Course description
This course is a yearly update for those working in cardiac, the emergency department or cardiac catheters, who see critically ill patients and are exposed to cardiac arrests on a regular basis. If the student's last course date was over 15 months ago, they must complete the full one day course.
 
Aims and outcomes

By the end of the course the student will be able:

  • to recognise a critically ill patient using an ABCDE approach
  • to deal with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, simple airway management and safe defibrillation (manual or automated external defibrillator)
  • to manage patients in cardiac arrest until arrival of a cardiac arrest team
  • to participate as members of cardiac arrest team.
 
Target audience
At Southampton the ILS recertification is run as a multidisciplinary course and aimed at those working in cardiac, the emergency department or cardiac catheters, who see critically ill patients and are exposed to cardiac arrests on a regular basis.
 
Prerequisites

An in date ILS certificate. If your last ILS course was more than 12 to 15 months ago you must do the full one day course. Your training record will be checked or if you are new to this trust you will be asked to produce your ILS certificate as evidence.
