Paediatric intensive care life support course (PICLS)

Course description

This course covers the recognition of the critically sick child and includes:

  • basic life support for adults, children and infants
  • safe use of defibrillators and recognition of ECG rhythms
  • airway management and preparation for intubation in the PICU.

Clinical scenarios will be undertaken relating to the management of critically sick children using the Sim baby.

 
Aims and outcomes

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

  • recognise and treat the critically sick child
  • safely use a defibrillator
  • prepare correct equipment for intubation
  • recognise abnormal ECG rhythms
  • understand airway management and be able to prepare for intubation in the PICU
  • successfully complete clinical scenarios using the Sim baby
 
Target audience

All nursing staff employed on PICU or PHDU
